Team Interaction Review Checklist

This article is for anyone involved in the hiring and team-building process needing to assess the effectiveness of their teams: Leaders, Human Resources, Consultants.

This article is for anyone involved in the hiring and team-building process:

  • Leaders – making strategic decisions to determine whether teams are functioning and interacting effectively.
  • Human Resources to deliver more training, review the behavioral and talent balance needs of the team, and oversee the requirements to replace a position on a team.
  • Consultants - who are working with Leaders and Human Resources on recruiting reviewing team interaction, hiring, and retraining.

Common Questions:

  1. How important is it to assess how team members communicate with each other, focusing on active listening, clarity, and respectful language?
  2. Is evaluating the level of teamwork and cooperation among team members, including the sharing of responsibilities and support for one another, a key area to review?
  3. In what way is observing how conflicts or disagreements are addressed within the team constructive?
  4. How critical to team interaction is the role of leaders in providing guidance, support, and leading by example within the team?
  5. Why is understanding goal alignment by the team members important in their efforts to achieve those goals?

Solution Overview:

DNA Behavior's approach to building this Team Interaction Checklist is that team alignment is paramount for goal attainment as it guarantees that each team member is on the same page regarding the mission and objectives. This shared vision promotes smooth collaboration, optimal resource allocation, and effective decision-making, collectively driving the team toward its desired outcomes.

Additionally, team alignment cultivates individual accountability, enhances team motivation, mitigates conflicts, and bolsters adaptability in response to changing conditions, all while providing leadership with the necessary information to make informed decisions and guide the team effectively.

Core Decision:

Does the team function well in effectively working together to achieve their goals?

As part of its Human Capital Performance Review, DNA Behavior has built a Team Interaction Review Checklist that has been carefully structured to help decision-makers objectively come to a “Yes or No” conclusion about the quality of the Team Interaction.

Instructions:

  1. A "Yes" means the team is functioning well, effectively working together, and achieving their goals.
  2. An “Amber” indicates some concern regarding team function in effectively working together and achieving their goals. An Amber can trigger more research, probing or consideration by the organization.
  3. A “Red” indicates some concern regarding team function in effectively working together and achieving their goals. If a Red, consideration needs to be given whether further team training and development is required, or a change is required to the team make-up.

The decision aid includes a specific sub-decision framework, each of the five sub-questions requiring a Yes or No answer. If there is a No at any point, that indicates that the team is not functioning to its optimum or more work is needed before a “Yes” answer can be given.

Sub-Decision Framework (refer to each tab for questions on each sub-decision):

  1. Is the team working well together toward achieving its set goals on time and within budget?
  2. Do the DNA Natural Behavior Discovery results reveal that the team is behaviorally aligned to achieve its objectives?
  3. Does the team share responsibilities and work collaboratively together?
  4. Does the team leader provide clear direction, motivate and empower team members, and foster a positive team culture?
  5. Does the organization have an adequate process for evaluating this team's interaction?
